Your first visit

What to expect at your first physio appointment

We want your first visit to leave you with a clear picture of what is happening and a realistic plan for addressing it — not a vague diagnosis and a rebooking slip.

Your first appointment

Allow 45 to 60 minutes for your initial physiotherapy appointment. This includes time to complete your intake paperwork, so please arrive 10 minutes early to get that done before your appointment begins. The extra time is used for a proper assessment — treatment does not begin until we understand what is actually driving your symptoms.

1. Detailed health history

We start by taking a thorough history of your current complaint — when it started, what makes it better or worse, how it behaves throughout the day, and whether there have been previous episodes. We also take a broader health history covering current medications, previous injuries, surgery and relevant family history. The history frequently tells us more than the physical examination.

2. Physical examination

The examination is tailored to your presentation. For musculoskeletal complaints it will typically include joint range of motion, muscle strength testing, orthopaedic provocation tests relevant to the suspected structures, and postural assessment. For neurological symptoms — arm or leg pain, numbness or weakness — it includes reflex testing, dermatomal sensation and myotomal strength.

For neck and headache presentations, specific upper cervical orthopaedic tests are included. For vestibular presentations, positional testing for BPPV and vestibulo-ocular reflex testing are performed. For pelvic floor presentations, both external and internal assessment options are explained and offered.

3. Imaging where needed

Not every patient needs imaging. Where an X-ray will change the diagnosis or treatment plan, we have a digital X-ray suite on-site. Results are reviewed the same day and discussed as part of your report. For MRI or CT referrals, we will provide a referral for the appropriate service.

Your report of findings

At the end of the assessment we sit down with you and explain what we found — in plain language. This includes what we believe is causing your symptoms, what the examination reveals, what imaging shows if taken, and what we recommend. If we believe your case is better managed elsewhere, we will tell you and refer appropriately. No treatment begins until you understand the findings and agree to the plan.

What to bring

  • Your private health fund card if you have one

  • A list of current medications
  • Comfortable clothing that allows access to the area of concern

Common questions

Before you come in

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly without a referral. DVA and EPC patients should mention this when booking so we can set up your appointment correctly.

Will I receive treatment on my first visit?

In most cases, yes — once the assessment is complete and findings are discussed, hands-on treatment typically begins in the same appointment. For complex presentations where the assessment takes the full time, treatment starts at the second visit.

How many sessions will I need?

We give you a realistic estimate after the first assessment. Most acute presentations respond within four to eight sessions. Chronic conditions and post-surgical rehabilitation take longer. We do not give open-ended treatment commitments.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. You are welcome to bring a support person to your appointment. For NDIS participants, support workers are welcome to attend.
